VBS: Joshua

Kris and I helped with our VBS this year.  He had created this Mad Scientist character called Dr. Tim Buktu that he would use in the 1st - 4th grade Wednesday night Faith in Action class on occasion.  He does science experiments and relates them to God.  So, Linda wanted him to be one of the centers for VBS this year.  Our VBS was called Joshua: the LORD saves!  Kris' experiments all had to do with pressure.  Joshua and Caleb had lots of pressure from the people after they had gone into Canaan and spied out the land.  All the other spies came back saying that the people who lived there were too powerful and that they "seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes" because the people were so big.  However, Joshua and Caleb came back saying that they should go take the land because they thought they could do it because the Lord was with them.  There was a lot of pressure from the people to not go try to take the land.  Kris talked about this kind of pressure and used his experiments to get some points across.

The kids were fascinated by the dry ice!

He had some of the kids come up and help him.  They were so cute.  Kris was so silly.

This was a big long balloon.  He would ask the kids how many breaths it would take to blow it up.  They would say all kinds of numbers!  Then, he would have a kid come try to blow it up.  They never could.  Then, he would talk about how he could do it in 3 breaths--with God's help--much like how Joshua told the Israelites that they could take the land of Canann with God's help.  The trick to it was to blow quick and then hold the balloon so that the air pressure is caught and can't get out.  It is hard to explain, but it works!

Hannah got so tickled at her daddy.  With this experiment, he used this bottle with a pump on top and pumped air in it which caused the marshmallows inside to get smaller and smaller and kind of shrivel up.  Then, when he released the pressure, they pop back into shape.  The kids loved it!

LOVE Hannah's face.

During the middle of his talk, he would go take a drink of his potion (the bowl with the dry ice in it) and then he would purposely spit on the kids as he talked.  Ha!

He did a great job!!!

I know the other centers were great too, but I didn't get to see many of them.  Then, in the auditorium, they acted out the story of Joshua.

Sunday morning they got to the part in the story of the Walls of Jericho where the people marched around the walls.  So, they brought all the kids in and marched them around the auditorium in front of the church.

Then, the walls fell down!!!

It was awesome!  What a great VBS!  So thankful for a husband who is not afraid to be his silly self and a church that loves its children and teaches them God's Word!!!
